There are usually around 60 casetas in the Feria de Abril de Cataluña, which belong to many different organisations and groups from banks to political parties and private organisations. In each one you will find a happy crowd who are eating, partying, singing and dancing "Sevillanas", the traditional dance of Andalucia. Everyone joins in the dancing, from the youngest of grandchildren to the oldest of grandparents and the atmosphere is fantastic. For sustenance between dances, the the big Spanish families sit at long tables and enjoy an abundance of Jerez sherry, or manzanilla wine, and tapas. Other big draws to the La Feria de Abril de Catalunya events are the many concerts with famous Spanish singers and bands .

La Mercè, patron saint of Barcelona
The legend goes that on the night of 24 September 1218, the Virgin appeared simultaneously to King Jaume I, Saint Pere Nolasc and Saint Ramón de Penyafort. She asked all three to create an order of monks dedicated to saving Christians imprisoned by the Saracens. It was the time of the wars of religion.

Centuries later in 1687, Barcelona suffered a plague of locusts, and placed itself in the hands of the Virgin of La Mercè. Once the plague had been overcome, the Council of the City named her patron saint of Barcelona. The Pope did not ratify this decision until two centuries later, however, in 1868.

The origins of the Annual Festival
After Pope Pius IX declared the Virgin of La Mercè the patron saint of the city, Barcelona began to celebrate a festival in the month of September. La Mercè really took off in 1902, when under the impulse of Francesc Cambó, the festival became the model the those that are currently held all over Catalonia. However, the history of La Mercè would suffer many high and low points that extended throughout the Civil War and the years of Franco.

The Festival today
With the arrival of democracy, La Mercè became a truly popular celebration thanks to the participation of organisations from all over the city. Today it is a festival held in a large number of public places with a programme centred on Mediterranean culture. In less than a week Barcelona brings together a huge programme of events which forces you to choose between them: street arts, street processions, concerts, traditional dances...

The Barcelona neighbourhood of Gràcia hits the streets on 15 August to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. The streets are filled with rainbow-coloured decorations and floral art. Live music and street entertainment kick-off the week-long Gràcia Festa Major celebrations.

The Spanish term coined to describe the flower decorations is arte festivo éfimero, which refers to the art's ephemeral quality. The people of Gràcia are particularly noted for their efforts, you won't see a better example anywhere in Catalonia.

Sit back and let the sights come to you. The bus tursitic stop at 44 points of interest along three different routes (red for the north, blue for the south, and green for the eastern waterfront). Tickets come with a 8 language brochure with information on each sight. A full ride on each route takes 2-3hr, but the idea is to get off at any place of interest and use the bus (as many times as you want in your days) as a confortable and convenient means of transportation. Getting between some of the sights without it wold require a taxi or familiarity with the bus sistem. You can buy the tickets once on board, or ahead of the time at Tursime de Catalunya, Pl de catalunaya, 17. in front of El Corte Inglés.

Pick up the extensive Guía del Ocio(€1) at a newsstand for a list of most restaurants in Barcelona.

Opening Hours
Spanish people eat very late. Normally, they go to restaurants for lunch between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm in the afternoon and for dinner not earlier than 9:00 pm. Restaurants therefore mostly open their kitchen at 9:00 pm and close at about 12: 00 am. Nevertheless, due to the huge number of tourists who are not used to eat late, many restaurants in Barcelona start to serve earlier, especially around Las Ramblas and the Barrí Gotic.

Prices
Spanish restaurants very often offer three course lunch menus (menú del día) that include salad, plates and a drink for a low price (8-15 Euro). In the evenings prices are a bit higher, starting at about 15 Euros. Nevertheless there are restaurants in every price category.

However, Ildefons Cerda's plan for gridded strets with ample park space and low buildings was not exactly closely followed. L'Eixample spacious right-angled streets provided the perfect setting for 19th century Modernist architecture's bright coulors and playful curves.

1. Hotel Lloret Start off in Hotel Lloret, 1 minute to Pl Catalunya and La Rambla (pedestrian street).

2. Pl. Catalunya Pl. Catalunya, on the lower border of of L'Eixample.

3. Pg. Gracia Walk up along the wide, tree-lined Pg. de Gracia and resist the tempatation to enter the endless array of designer boutiques. You may notice a significant difference from the cramped, old building of the Barri Gotic.

4. La Manzana de la Discordia The entire block between C. Aragó and C.Consell de Cent, known as La Manzana de la Discordia, is one of the most notable Modernist landmark. It is known as the block of discord due to the clash among three designs: Casa Amatller, Casa Lleó, and Casa Batlló.

5. Casa Milà (La Pedrera) Three long blocks up Pg. de Gracia is perhaps Gaudi`s best known work aside from La Sagrada Familia. This buildings, designed to mimic the ocean´s waves and seaweed, and its are definitely worth a visit.

6. La Sagrada Familia The last stop is well worth the long walk. Take a right on C. Provença and follow it for 11 blocks. You cannot miss Gaudi's masterpiece.

Font de Canaletes-visitors who want to come back to Barcelona are supposed to sample the fountain's water (behind the fountain finds hotel lloret). Halfway down La Rambla, Joan Miro's paviment mosaic brightens up the alrady colourful street. Pass the Monument a Colom on the way out to Rambla del Mar for a spectacular view of the Mediterranean.

Running down the center of the Ciutat Vella (dividing the Raval and Barri Gòtic) is the boulevard La Rambla.
La Rambla stretches from Plaça Catalunya to the Mediterranean Sea and, now extends out over the sea into one of Barcelona's newest centers of entertainment, Maremagnum.

The blue "Aerobus" operates a route between the Airport and Plaça Catalunya, right in the centre of Barcelona. There is a stop in front of each of the 3 terminal buildings. The buses have luggage racks and special ramps for disabled passengers.
